PLATE 6. Presentation of a Princess

Prince Chulalongkorn's Tonsurate ceremony in 1865.

The picture on the left, is a close up of the original photograph by John Thomson. The illustrator used this to make his drawing for the book. Although Anna should have known better (after all, she claimed to have been there) the illustrator mistook the fittings of the ceremonial hat as curly hair and made the "prince" a "princess". The picture on the right, is the same day but from a different angle. Notice the signature for John Thompson in the lower left hand corner.

The black and white pictures above were taken in front of Phra Thinang Aporn Phimok Prasat. You can see this building when you visit the Grand Palace (see left). Click here to see more pictures taken by our students.
